WHAT TO PREPARE

Music

  • 32 bars of music from a song in a similar style to the show that best shows your voice and range.

  • You may use songs from Into the Woods, and songs from other Sondheim shows are recommended.

  • Must have accompaniment (either legible sheet music or instrumental track)

  • Pianist will be provided.

  • Bluetooth speaker will be provided.​

​

There is no need to prepare a monologue.

We will provide sides for some characters.

​

CHARACTER LIST​

​

NARRATOR

(May double as the Mysterious Man) An intellectual and pleasant story-teller who helps to orchestrate the show and illustrate lessons to the audience.

Any gender/age

Vocal range: E4-G2

CINDERELLA

A young, earnest maiden who is constantly mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters.

Female, 18 to early 30s

Vocal range: G5-G3

​​

JACK

The feckless Giant killer who is ‘almost a man.’ He is adventurous, naive, energetic, and bright-eyed.

Male, child to early 20s

Vocal range: G4-B2

​​​

JACK'S MOTHER

Browbeating and weary, Jack’s protective mother who is independent, bold, and strong-willed.

Female, 40 to 65

Vocal range: Gb5- Bb3

​​

THE BAKER

A harried and insecure baker who is simple and loving, yet protective of his family. He wants his wife to be happy and is willing to do anything to ensure her happiness but refuses to let others fight his battles.

Male, late 20s to early 40s

Vocal range: G4-Ab2

THE BAKER'S WIFE

Determined and bright woman who wishes to be a mother. She leads a simple, yet satisfying life and is very low-maintenance yet proactive in her endeavors.

Female, late 20s to early 40s

CINDERELLA'S STEPMOTHER

The mean-spirited, demanding stepmother of Cinderella.

Female, late 30s to late 50s

Vocal range: F#5-A3

FLORINDA & LUCINDA

Cinderella’s stepsisters who are black of heart. They follow in their mother’s footsteps of abusing Cinderella.

Female, 18 to early 30s

Vocal range: Ab5- C4

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD

A spoiled young girl who is strong-willed, quick-witted, fearless, yet youthful and naive.

Female: child to early 20s

Vocal range: F5- Bb3

THE WITCH

Sarcastic, ugly-then-gorgeous, obsessive protector of Rapunzel who is straightforward and aggressive.

Female, early 30s to mid 50s

Vocal range: G5-F3

CINDERELLA'S MOTHER

Deceased with her soul guarding and aiding her daughter from a tree.

Female, 40 to 55

Vocal range: F4-E4

THE MYSTERIOUS MAN

(May double as the Narrator) A mischievous vagrant and nosy meddler. He is a good-natured protector and observer.

Male, 50 to 65

Vocal range: Eb4-G2

WOLF/CINDERELLA'S PRINCE

Wolf: Hungry and insatiable hunter who takes advantage of the weak by misleading and captivating his prey.

Prince: Vain and gorgeous, he is a disloyal lover who is currently searching for the next new, exciting thing.

Male, early 20s to late 40s

Wolf vocal range: Gb4-Bb2

Prince vocal range: F4-B2

RAPUNZEL

A loopy-but-lovely maiden who is sheltered by the Witch and terribly lonely. She yearns to experience the world.

Female, mid 20s to mid 30s

Vocal range: A5-B3

RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE

Just as vain and gorgeous as his Prince brother, he is always chasing the newest, most exciting endeavor.

Male, 30 to 40

Vocal range: E4-C#3

​​

THE STEWARD

A Man-servant who is used to doing whatever he has to to solve a problem. His only care is to please his master or the strongest personality in the room. Conniving, callous, and cowardly.

Male, 30 to 50

CINDERELLA'S FATHER

Out of touch with his family but harmless and well-meaning.

Male 40+
